Bamyan was Afghanistan's only real tourist province — the giant Buddha niches, the Band-e-Amir lakes, and a predominantly Hazara population that was notably more socially open than the Pashtun south. Pre-2021, it was genuinely one of the more accessible places in Afghanistan for a foreigner, with guesthouses, trekking, and real interaction possible. Taliban control has shut down most of that, but Bamyan's Hazara character and geographic isolation from the power centers means it still carries a different vibe — just with far fewer people around to experience it.

A foreign man here today would find the landscape dramatic and the people historically hospitable, but the political context limits everything.
